Departmental Overview:
The Department contains a suite of 7 rooms in the Junior School plus 2 in the Senior School. There are 10 teachers in the Department.
All pupils in Years 8-10 study towards KS3 examinations. They are taught in mixed ability classes.
In Years 11 and 12 the pupils are taught in streamed classes according to one of the following:
Additional Mathematics GCSE & Mathematics GCSE
Statistics GCSE & Mathematics GCSE
Mathematics GCSE
At A-Level (Year13) everyone studies CCEA Modules in Core Mathematics 1, Core Mathematics 2 and Mechanics 1.
In Year14 the students study modules: Core Mathematics 3, Core Mathematics 4 and Statistics 1. These students will also complete a short project that will entitle them to apply for the qualification: Key Skills: Level 3: Application of Number.
Further Mathematics students will study a combination of modules: Further Mathematics 1, Further Mathematics 2, Further Mathematics 3, Mechanics 2, Mechanics 3 and Statistics 2.
What Do I Need to Study A-Level Mathematics?
Grade A in GCSE Mathematics.
Note a Grade B may be acceptable if your Mathematics teacher assesses you for Grade A before you sit your examination, and considers your work is at an appropriate level, and is satisfied you have a good understanding of Algebra & Problem Solving.
Activities / Competitions
Throughout the year there are many mathematical events and competitions in which pupils are encouraged to participate:
November – some Year 13 and most of Year 14 pupils sit the Senior Maths Challenge.
February - about 50 pupils from Years 11 - 12 enter the Intermediate Maths Challenge.
April – about 50 pupils from Year 9 enter the Junior Maths Challenge.
KS4 students also participate each year in a Mathématiques Sans Frontières Competition and LASCO Competition.
KS3 pupils are all encouraged to take part in activities which require logic and strategy, such as: Problem Solving days, Game 24, Suduko.
