Home Economics at St Columb's College...

. All Year 8 and 9 pupils in St Columb’s study Home Economics as part of Key Stage Three Learning for Life and Work.  This is taught on a carousel basis giving each pupil 12 weeks of experience in a number of different areas.    Pupils follow a Home Economics programme that develops their thinking skills and personal capabilities here in St Columb’s and in the fully equipped kitchens of our partner school St Brigid’s College, Carnhill..

Each Year 8 and Year 9 pupil attends practical lessons in St Brigid’s Carnhill on a number of occasions throughout the year.

Being prepared for Home Economics

All pupils are expected to come to Home Economics class fully equipped and must bring with them an apron and a tea towel.  Home Economics ‘Cool Kitz’ can be purchased in school for the price of £2.

Home Economics helps pupils develop in many areas including:
  • Independent living
  • Diet and food choice
  • Family relations
  • Parenting
  • Financial & Consumer awareness


All of which are important educational, social and economic issues.
